This series highlights the diverse backgrounds and leadership styles of Taylor's top executives, providing valuable lessons and inspiration for the entire organization. This month's Leader of Taylor is Brent Olsen, Vice President of Information Technology at Taylor Corporation.
Growing up in a small town, Brent enjoyed the close-knit community and outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. His father, a director of human resources, and his mother, a director of nursing, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a love for helping others. Brent's early exposure to computers, starting with the Atari 400 and Tandy 1000, sparked his interest in technology.
Initially pursuing political science at Mankato State University, Brent realized it wasn't his passion and joined the Air National Guard. He later discovered his true calling in management information systems, leading to a successful career in IT. Brent's journey at Taylor Corporation began as a temporary employee at Carlson Craft, where he quickly advanced and found numerous opportunities for growth.
In March 2021, Brent experienced a life-changing stroke. Despite the challenges, he made a remarkable recovery with the support of his family and therapy. Brent's resilience and determination have shaped his approach to problem-solving, focusing on fewer, more effective solutions. He credits the leadership at Taylor Corporation for making his return to work smooth and supportive. The outstanding support from his boss and colleagues during his recovery process was instrumental in his successful reintegration into the workforce.
At Taylor, Brent values the entrepreneurial opportunities and the ability to shape the future of the company. He aims to build a finely tuned IT organization, leveraging strategic precision and innovative solutions to drive success.
